Oil’s well at Liverpool One as Grosvenor launches new initiative
Grosvenor has installed an innovative bio-diesel processor at Liverpool ONE, its award-winning £1 billion retail-led regeneration of Liverpool city centre, in a move that will save more than 53,000 kg CO2 equivalents, (per annum) enough to fill 312 double decker buses.
The used vegetable oil (UVO) diesel processor, deployed by Aardvark Environment Matters Ltd, converts all used cooking oil from Liverpool ONE’s restaurants directly into fuel that can be used to run all diesel powered vehicles, including all of Liverpool ONE’s on-site vehicles. 1,700 litres can be created every month.
In addition to reducing equivalent CO2 emissions at Liverpool ONE, the scheme has significant waste prevention benefits, by diverting the used cooking oil from landfill, as well as reducing Liverpool ONE’s dependency on fossil fuels and associated price volatility.
Liverpool ONE’s occupiers receive a direct benefit, as the savings made in purchasing fuel are returned directly to the service charge.
Chris Taite, the Grosvenor Fund Manager responsible for Liverpool ONE commented: “This is an important initiative for Grosvenor and we hope the industry will consider its wider adoption. The investment is low, the returns are high and it is very easy to implement. In our opinion, it is the ideal way for the industry to demonstrate that it can proactively seek creative solutions to reduce its environmental impact in ways which benefit all stakeholders.”
Nick Leaney, Director at Aardvark Environment Matters Ltd, added: “Too many so-called eco-schemes are nothing more than ‘greenwash’. By installing the used vegetable oil diesel processor, Grosvenor has implemented a simple, effective and sustainable initiative that will have immediate and long-term real benefits in reducing carbon emissions”
