Aardvark project
Anti Bird Strike Grass Management
| Location: Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted Airports | Client: British Airports Authority PLC |
| Date: 2004 to date | Sector: Waste |
Project Objectives
- To support the ongoing BAA anti bird strike grass management program
- To design a cost effective waste management system
- To recycle all waste back to the airfields
- To provide ongoing management and support.
Delivery
- Under civil aviation rules, airports are required to manage landscape areas in order to prevent aircraft bird strike. BAA have developed an advanced anti bird strike program that requires continuous maintenance of the airfield areas. Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted each have approximately 300 hectares of grass and landscaped areas which generate significant quantities of green waste
- In 2003 Aardvark were commissioned to develop a pilot scheme to process this waste in a cost effective and environmentally friendly manner. Aardvark established a pilot composting plant at Stansted gaining the necessary regulatory consents. The success of the trial resulted in Aardvark being awarded a 7 year contract and became directly contracted by BAA Business Partner to roll out the scheme
- Aardvark provided BAA with an in-house green waste management program for each of the three airfield sites providing a significant cost saving in terms of recycling all materials back to airfield areas eliminating the need for off site disposal. These enabled BAA to measure and capture the data from this activity and use this to towards their recycling and sustainability targets.
